Standards of Care and Laboratory Interpretations

This session will address the standards of care for newly diagnosed and experienced HIV infected patients. Specific laboratory/diagnostic tests that might be needed due to HIV-treatment will be covered. Laboratory test results as well as virological and immunological interpretations will be presented.

ARV Management - Selecting the Right Treatment
Jeffrey Beal, MD

This presentation will review the new guidelines on when and how to initiate HIV treatment, and how to monitor initial treatment, including teaching points for the patient. Defining treatment failure and discussion of choosing the next regimen will be included.

ARVs: What We Have and What is Coming (Track:- Medication/Pharmacy- Related Topics)
Michael Thompson, PharmD, BCNSP

This session will present the different classes of antiretroviral medications that are available for HIV-infected patients.  Information on the different ARVs will include potency, formulation, half life and side effects. Drug-to-drug interactions and what to avoid will also be discussed.

Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction
Marilyn Volker, EdD

Addressing sexuality and intimacy issues can be challenging for nurses who are often the front-line educator in medical sexuality issues. During this presentation, Dr. Volker will identify the role of nurses in facilitating sexual healh care. She will also discuss the four components of patient's sexual identity, strategies for education and intervention, as well as resources for patients and professionals.

Resistance Interpretation (Starting with the Basics)
Iván Meléndez-Rivera, MD, FAAFP, AAHIVS

This session will present how mutations occur during replication and how the mutations confer different levels of resistance. The appropriate use of resistance tests will be discussed. Participants will learn how to identify each part of the genotype and phenotype test and perform a basic interpretation in three simple steps.

Clinical Manifestations of STDs in HIV

This presentation will cover the prevalence of STDs in the US and Florida. Linkage between STDs and HIV will be discussed. Clinical manifestation of STDs, lab interpretations as well as up-to-date treatment options will also be discussed.

Women and HIV

This Session will cover gender/sex differences in HIV patients and therapeutic challenges facing HIV-infected women. Complications of antiretroviral therapy as well as primary care needs of HIV-infected women will be discussed. Need for research opportunities specific to women will be addressed.
